MSE 210 Crystal structure and bonding
4 units, 3 hrs lecture and 1 hr discussion per week;
Introduces the principles of symmetry, crystallography and crystal chemistry and builds knowledge on the architecture of crystals as a starting point for understanding the properties and behavior of materials. Explores the ways in which atoms are build together into regular three-dimensional patterns, an important underlying principle of any modern solid-state science.
MSE 221 Electron microscopy and microanalysis
3 units, 3 hrs lecture and 1 hr discussion per week; offered every other year in the Winter quarter.
Introduction to electron microscopy and microanalysis of inorganic solids including synthetic nanomaterials and minerals. The class discusses the underlying physical principles of electron microscopy and microanalysis, the strengths and limitations of the method and the potential applications in characterization of morphology, structure, composition and defects of inorganic materials and nanostructures.
MSE 297 Electron microscopy lab
1 unit, operation of scanning and transmission electron microscopes and practical application in individually selected research topics.
